Star Citizen is a space MMO in development from Cloud Imperium Games Corporation and Chris Roberts, designer of the famous Freelancer and Wing Commander series. Star Citizen will consist of two main elements: a persistent world massively multiplayer online game mixing elements of 1st person space combat and interstellar trade (known as Star Citizen) and a branching single-player and drop-in co-operative multiplayer campaign (known as Squadron 42), together with customizable private server components. The game will feature Oculus Rift support.

Both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are set in a 30th-century Milky Way centered around the fictional UEE (United Empire of Earth), an analogue of the late Roman Empire. A central theme of the game is citizenship (or lack thereof) in the UEE, which must be earned through player actions (such as completing a period of military service). It is anticipated that Citizens will enjoy certain in game benefits, for example paying a reduced tax rate or having easier access to interspecies trade, but the exact details are yet to be determined. [2]

Star Citizen will be available for a one-time purchase fee and no subscription, with an item shop based on in-game currency for convenience and customization items.

Will this game ever get released? Star citizen have looked beautiful since the beginning but there is no gameplay at all.

I'm a bit shocked at how little the SC community seems to care about the revelation that the game will only contain 5-10 star systems at launch. That is a HUGE departure from what I perceived the game to be. It seems that SC is slowly morphing from an X3/Freelancer style game to a game where you explore enormous planetary environments and it worries me. The planet tech theyve shown off is incredibly impressive but I didn't back SC to wander around giant procgen planets, I backed it for a modern, ambitious space flight/economy/exploration game.

I want LARGE SPACE SHIPS, some not intended to ever go planet side. I don't care how dense the planet content is, it doesn't mean shit to the game play i backed to have based on the stretch goals at the time.

I'm hoping the number they're floating now is a gross understatement for release. Wasn't expecting the typical MMO zone crush at release with a hundred systems planned. 1 to 10? Is unacceptable to me. Will see how it plays out. First disappointing news for me. Delays? Meh. In high tech and we have programs running much further behind than CIG and there are liquidated damage clauses. Bleeding edge dev is that way sometimes. But for a game about SPACE and exploration the #1 activity planned by the backers to service those expectations with so few systems at release? No happy!

Cloud Imperium once again delayed the release of alpha 3.0, chiefly from a desire to polish and work on the UI. 3.0 is now scheduled to go fully live in late August following a month in the hands of the elite Evocati player testers, which lines up with Gamescom.

Let's just hope they don't try to add too many features and forget about polishing up core gameplay, also space looks pretty empty atm, no background or anything, still alpha tho so i guess they will change that. Honestly when is this game coming out?

I sure hope they're able to pull this game off.. I really don't think they will be able to, but I sorely hope to be proven wrong in the long run because this would be a really special achievement in gaming to have.

So far it's a lot of pretty set pieces with basic mechanics separated into separate game prototypes essentially. It makes for an awe inspiring trailer but the truth is it's still a concept, and I've seen concepts die as early access games over and over and over and over, or remain early access for years and never get remotely close to finished.

I'll start to believe it's possible once all the modules are together as one seamless game and with thousands of people playing together on the same servers or universe. Until then I remain 100% skeptical, especially considering that guy's game development past, but mostly because of the ridiculous scope. Though I guess it is one in the same in most ways.

If they do pull it off, it will truly be a legendary first-of-its-kind game. But we'll see what happens..

People are going to be angry when this game releases. And the hype for this game is infinitely greater than the hype was for No Man's Sky. I see absolutely zero difference in the communities, well, the Star Citizen fans are even more defensive than the No Man's Sky fans were.

Seriously, you all see how the Star Citizen fans attack posters who are either not liking this game or are not sure about it? They are straight up ravenous, not missing any opportunity to attack what they call "detractors".

The more you want it, the more you are going to be disappointed.

They are too busy adding tiny details so everyone can post and brag about how polished the game is to actually develop the game part of the game. SC has promised their universe would have 100 star systems, they barely have one planet and just a hand full of stations.

They are running the risk of polishing literally 1% of the game and end up having to rush the other 99%.

The thing I have trouble understanding is the real lack of content. I know they've said they plan on focusing on game systems first, but the problem is that systems require designers and programmers, not so much regarding artists. Nothing is stopping them from designing the environments, lore, concept arts, art assets and even levels while they do the game's systems. Yes, there might be object data and other things of the likes that you can't place yet, but that is only the fraction of the amount of work that goes into these assets.

Either they must be sitting on a wealth of undisclosed art and assets, or they are massively behind.

They work on meaningless cosmetic detail just to "wow" people, while the true core game is never delivered or even worked on. The netcode is still terrible and the lag is insurmountable. The alpha game is literally unplayable.

4 freaking years and it's still in ALPHA. This. not what they originally promised. Delays keeps coming, and they keep expanding the game even though the core game is still far from finished. They keep selling ships for more money. I'm sorry but this smells more like Chris Roberts can't stay to one concept and stick with it.
